The Indian government is set to roll out incentives under the Production-Linked Incentive (PLI) scheme for the automobile and auto component sectors in the January-March quarter of the current financial year. This Rs 25,938 crore initiative, introduced in 2021, aims to stimulate domestic manufacturing of Advanced Automotive Technology products and encourage investments in India's automotive value chain. A total of 18 companies have been approved to participate in the scheme under the Champion OEM category, with 67 companies approved under the Component Champion category. The scheme's overall investment target is Rs 67,690 crore, with Rs 20,715 crore already invested by September 2024 and sales expected to increase by Rs 10,472 crore. Notably, the PLI scheme has a specific focus on boosting electric vehicles, components, and local manufacturing. It comprises incentives for battery electric and hydrogen fuel cell vehicles across all segments, along with incentives for high-tech and high-value vehicle components. Minister HD Kumaraswamy highlighted that 50% of the Direct Value Addition (DVA) certification has been confirmed, indicating an impending rise in automobile manufacturing within India. The government's efforts, including schemes like PLI Auto, PM EDRIVE, PLI Advanced Chemistry Cell, and the Payment Security mechanism, are designed to elevate local manufacturing standards and enhance the global competitiveness of the Indian automotive industry.
