India's Green Hydrogen Push: Refueling Stations for Green Ships in the Indian Ocean
Key Ideas
- Government plans to establish green hydrogen refueling stations along the southern coast of India for green ships in the Indian Ocean.
- Focus on providing green ammonia and green methanol to vessels, with plans to convert and retrofit ships to run on cleaner fuels.
- Consideration of using green hydrogen produced through biomass at refueling stations on highways.
- National Green Hydrogen Mission aims to promote green hydrogen usage in the shipping sector with an allocated budget of ₹19,744 crore up to FY30.
The Union government of India is contemplating the establishment of green hydrogen refueling stations along the southern coast to cater to green ships traversing the Indian Ocean. Abhay Bhakre, from the National Green Hydrogen Mission, mentioned plans to provide green ammonia and green methanol derived from green hydrogen to ships based on their requirements. The aim is to refuel ships passing through the Indian Ocean by offering cleaner fuel options. Discussions are ongoing with vessel companies to convert and retrofit ships to run on green fuels. The initiative has already converted five ships, with plans to retrofit a total of 50 ships and potentially convert 200 more in the future. There is also a proposal to prioritize the use of green hydrogen derived from biomass at highway refueling stations. The Teri report suggests that globally, green hydrogen, green ammonia, and green methanol are being explored for shipping, and India could start modestly in this direction. Kerala is recommended to set a timeline for transitioning tourism vessels to carbon-free, enhancing the state's tourism brand value. Pilot projects for green shipping could be implemented with minimal financial burden. The government's National Green Hydrogen Mission, launched in January 2023, has allocated ₹19,744 crore until FY30 to promote the use of green hydrogen in the shipping sector.
