Union Minister of Petroleum and Natural Gas, Hardeep Singh Puri, expressed India's potential to become a significant player in the green hydrogen sector during the International Conference on Green Hydrogen in New Delhi. With abundant natural resources and robust infrastructure, India aims to meet the global hydrogen demand, projected to reach 200 million tonnes by 2030. The Minister outlined India's strategic vision, indicating that 54 percent of the country's annual hydrogen consumption is in the petroleum refining sector. Public Sector Undertakings under the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas have set a target to produce over 1 million metric tons of green hydrogen by 2030. Puri detailed India's achievements in green hydrogen production, electrolyser manufacturing capacity, and tender issuances for green hydrogen and ammonia. The Green Hydrogen Policy and National Green Hydrogen Mission aim to boost production targets, reduce fossil fuel imports, create jobs, and attract substantial investments. India's competitive advantage in the green hydrogen sector stems from its low-cost solar energy and investments in the power grid. The country has significantly expanded its installed solar capacity, reaching 85.5 GW supported by a robust power grid capable of managing renewable energy efficiently. Overall, India's push towards green hydrogen signifies a path to energy independence, job creation, and economic growth, with a positive outlook on reducing fossil fuel dependency and embracing renewable energy sources.
