The Ministry of New and Renewable Energy in India has introduced the National Green Hydrogen Mission to encourage the production and utilization of green hydrogen in the steel sector. The Ministry of Steel is actively involved in this initiative by awarding pilot projects for Direct Reduced Iron (DRI) production and Blast Furnace operation using hydrogen. While current technology for green steel production is not yet commercially viable, the government is supporting pilot projects to integrate Green Hydrogen in the steel sector. Several steps have been taken to promote green steel, including releasing a comprehensive report on decarbonising the steel sector and implementing schemes like steel scrap recycling, National Solar Mission, and the PAT scheme for energy efficiency. These efforts aim to reduce emissions, enhance energy efficiency, and drive towards sustainable steel production in India. The Union Minister for Steel and Heavy Industries, Shri H.D. Kumaraswamy, emphasized these initiatives in a written reply in the Lok Sabha, highlighting the government's commitment to promoting green steel and sustainability in the steel industry.
