India's Green Steel Mission: A Step Towards Sustainable Steel Production
Key Ideas
  • India launches a Rs 15,000 crore 'Green Steel Mission' to reduce carbon emissions in the steel sector, aiming to align with decarbonisation goals.
  • The mission includes incentives for green steel production, renewable energy adoption, and green steel procurement by government bodies.
  • Collaboration between the Ministry of Steel and Ministry of New and Renewable Energy under the 'National Green Hydrogen Mission' to increase green hydrogen use in steel manufacturing.
  • Investments in the PLI scheme for specialty steel aim to reduce reliance on imports, with companies committing over Rs 27,000 crore for specialty steel production.
The Indian government has launched the 'Green Steel Mission' with a budget of Rs 15,000 crore to combat the high carbon emissions of the steel sector, representing 10-12% of the country's total emissions. This initiative includes a production linked incentive (PLI) program to promote green steel production, encourage the adoption of renewable energy, and mandate green steel procurement by government agencies. Additionally, the government is collaborating with the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy for the 'National Green Hydrogen Mission' to promote the use of green hydrogen in steel manufacturing, with a allocated budget of Rs 455 crore until FY2029-30 for pilot projects. As part of efforts to reduce reliance on imports, a PLI scheme for specialty steel has been introduced, resulting in significant investments and commitments totaling Rs 27,106 crore. This investment is expected to lead to the production of 7.90 million tonnes of specialty steel, with over Rs 17,000 crore already invested and more than 8,660 jobs created by October 2024. Despite possessing abundant reserves of iron ore and non-coking coal, India has seen a steady increase in coking coal imports, with volumes rising from 51.20 MMT in 2020-21 to 58.12 MMT in 2023-24, including 30.19 MMT imported during April-September 2024. The Steel Ministry is dedicated to reducing emissions and enhancing domestic steel production to meet the country's rising demand in an environmentally sustainable manner.
