India is on the cusp of a groundbreaking achievement in the realm of rail transportation with the imminent launch of the country's first hydrogen-powered train after June 2025. The Ministry of Railways has been diligently working to unveil this innovative mode of transport, heralding a new era of sustainable and eco-friendly travel. The hydrogen train, being manufactured by Chennai-based Integral Coach Factory, stands out globally for its remarkable 1,200 horsepower engine, setting a new standard in power for such trains. This advancement underscores India's commitment to green technology and zero carbon emissions. The project not only focuses on the train itself but also encompasses the establishment of an advanced hydrogen refueling infrastructure to facilitate seamless operations and support India's vision for clean energy transportation. Spearheaded by Indian Railways, this initiative aims to not only create history with the world's longest and most powerful hydrogen-powered train but also to showcase the potential of hydrogen trains in revolutionizing sustainable rail transport. The train, designed and developed entirely in India, is set to operate on the Jind-Sonipat route, marking a significant step towards eco-friendly rail travel in the country. Furthermore, with a substantial budget allocation of Rs 2,800 crore, the Ministry of Railways plans to introduce a fleet of 35 hydrogen fuel cell-based trains, highlighting India's dedication to embracing clean energy solutions and fostering a greener future for transportation.
