  • This pioneering initiative aims to convert coal into valuable gases like methane and hydrogen, presenting industrial applications in various sectors.
  • The collaboration between Eastern Coalfields Limited, CMPDI, and Ergo Exergy Technologies Inc. is a testament to the commitment to innovation and efficiency in the coal sector.
  • The successful implementation of this UCG project is expected to revolutionize the energy sector in India, utilizing coal resources sustainably and advancing energy security.
The Ministry of Coal in India has set in motion the first-ever pilot project for Underground Coal Gasification (UCG) in the Kasta coal block located in Jamtara District, Jharkhand. This initiative, spearheaded by Eastern Coalfields Limited (ECL) under the guidance of the Ministry, aims to transform the coal industry by converting coal into valuable gases like methane, hydrogen, carbon monoxide, and carbon dioxide through in-situ gasification. These gases hold significant industrial applications, including the production of synthetic natural gas and chemical feedstocks for various sectors such as fuels, fertilizers, and explosives. By unlocking coal deposits that are not economically viable through conventional mining methods, UCG provides a crucial advantage in resource utilization. The project, funded by the CIL R&D Board, is a collaboration between ECL, CMPDI, and EETI from Canada, set to span two years. The initial phase involves feasibility assessments through borehole drilling and sample testing, leading to the subsequent pilot-scale coal gasification phase. The successful execution of this endeavor is anticipated to bring transformative changes to India's energy landscape, showcasing sustainable and efficient coal resource utilization. The Ministry of Coal expresses full support for this groundbreaking project and foresees a positive impact on the nation's energy future. This milestone project signifies a leap in coal gasification technology, accentuating energy security and sustainable development goals. As the project progresses, it aims to set new standards in coal resource utilization, significantly contributing to India's path towards energy self-sufficiency. The Ministry reaffirms its dedication to fostering innovation and efficiency in the coal sector, shaping a resilient and environmentally friendly energy trajectory for the country.
