The Ministry of Coal in India has set in motion the first-ever pilot project for Underground Coal Gasification (UCG) in the Kasta coal block located in Jamtara District, Jharkhand. This initiative, spearheaded by Eastern Coalfields Limited (ECL) under the guidance of the Ministry, aims to transform the coal industry by converting coal into valuable gases like methane, hydrogen, carbon monoxide, and carbon dioxide through in-situ gasification. These gases hold significant industrial applications, including the production of synthetic natural gas and chemical feedstocks for various sectors such as fuels, fertilizers, and explosives. By unlocking coal deposits that are not economically viable through conventional mining methods, UCG provides a crucial advantage in resource utilization. The project, funded by the CIL R&D Board, is a collaboration between ECL, CMPDI, and EETI from Canada, set to span two years. The initial phase involves feasibility assessments through borehole drilling and sample testing, leading to the subsequent pilot-scale coal gasification phase.
