India's National Green Hydrogen Mission Expands to Meet Growing Demand in Fertilizer Sector
Key Ideas
- The Ministry of New & Renewable Energy in India is implementing the National Green Hydrogen Mission to achieve a production capacity of 5 million tonnes per annum by 2030.
- The Mission includes incentive schemes like the SIGHT Programme Component II for Green Ammonia production, with an increased allocation for the fertilizer sector.
- The amendment to the Scheme Guidelines increases the allocation under Mode 2A Scheme for the Fertiliser sector from 5,50,000 tonnes to 7,50,000 tonnes per annum, responding to the rising demand.
- With an outlay of Rs. 19,744 crores up to FY 2029-30, the Mission aims to make India self-reliant through clean energy and lead in the global Clean Energy Transition.
The Ministry of New & Renewable Energy in India is actively implementing the National Green Hydrogen Mission (NGHM) to boost the country's production capacity of Green Hydrogen. With a target of achieving 5 million tonnes per annum by 2030, the Mission is making significant strides. The Scheme Guidelines for the SIGHT Programme Component II, focusing on Green Ammonia production under Mode 2A, have been issued to cater to the fertilizer sector's requirements. Solar Energy Corporation of India (SECI) has also initiated the selection process for Green Ammonia Producers through competitive bidding. As the demand for Green Hydrogen and its derivatives rises across sectors, the Ministry has decided to amend the Scheme Guidelines by increasing the allocation for the Fertiliser sector under Mode 2A Scheme from 5,50,000 tonnes to 7,50,000 tonnes per annum. This adjustment aims to meet the growing demand for Green Ammonia in the country. The National Green Hydrogen Mission, launched in January 2023 with a significant budget, is poised to contribute to India's self-reliance goals through clean energy. By promoting economic decarbonization, reducing fossil fuel imports, and positioning India as a leader in Green Hydrogen technology, the Mission will play a pivotal role in the global Clean Energy Transition.
