Innovative Circular Methanol and Hydrogen Plant in Italy Drives Green Mobility and Clean Energy
Key Ideas
  • NextChem's NX CircularTM technology enables the production of up to 110,000 tons of circular methanol and 1,500 tons of circular hydrogen annually, supporting green mobility and clean energy initiatives.
  • The plant will convert 200,000 tons per year of non-recyclable waste into synthesis gas, contributing to environmental sustainability by producing high-quality sustainable fuels and chemicals.
  • The circular methanol produced meets EU Renewable Energy Directive criteria for Recycled Carbon Fuels, providing an innovative solution for reducing carbon emissions in the maritime sector and beyond.
  • The project not only optimizes costs by leveraging existing infrastructure and expertise but also showcases Italy's commitment to environmental sustainability and economic growth in the energy transition.
MET Development (MAIRE), Eni, and Iren Ambiente are collaborating to establish an innovative circular methanol and hydrogen production plant utilizing NEXTCHEM's NX CircularTM technology at Eni's refinery in Sannazzaro de' Burgondi, Italy. This plant, with a capacity of up to 110,000 tons per year of circular methanol and 1,500 tons per year of circular hydrogen, aims to drive green mobility and clean energy initiatives. The technology enables the conversion of 200,000 tons of non-recyclable waste annually into synthesis gas, which is then used to produce sustainable fuels and chemicals. The circular methanol produced meets EU standards for Recycled Carbon Fuels, offering a low-carbon alternative for decarbonizing the maritime sector. Additionally, the plant will recover 33,000 tons per year of inert granulate for use in the cement industry, contributing to sector decarbonization. By leveraging existing infrastructure and technical expertise, the project optimizes costs and supports Italy's path towards energy transition and meeting international fuel regulations.
