Innovative Circular Methanol and Hydrogen Production Plant Promotes Sustainability in Italy
Key Ideas
  • Collaboration between MET Development, Eni, and Iren Ambiente initiates permitting for a cutting-edge circular methanol and hydrogen production plant in Italy.
  • The plant will process 200,000 tons of non-recyclable waste annually to produce syngas, leading to the production of 110,000 tons of circular methanol and 1,500 tons of circular hydrogen each year.
  • The project not only focuses on fuel production but also aims to recover 33,000 tons of inert granulate annually for use in the cement industry, contributing to further carbon emission reduction.
  • By leveraging existing infrastructure at the Sannazzaro refinery, the project minimizes costs, maximizes expertise, and promotes efficient implementation, marking a significant step towards the energy transition in Italy.
MET Development (MAIRE), Eni, and Iren Ambiente have collaborated to start the permitting process for a revolutionary circular methanol and hydrogen production plant in Sannazzaro de’ Burgondi, Italy. Powered by NEXTCHEM’s NX CircularTM technology, the plant will utilize 200,000 tons of non-recyclable waste annually to generate syngas, which will be converted into 110,000 tons of circular methanol and 1,500 tons of circular hydrogen per year. The circular methanol will aid in decarbonizing the maritime industry, while the circular hydrogen can support refinery processes or sustainable mobility in transport sectors. Additionally, the plant will recover 33,000 tons of inert granulate each year for use in the cement industry, contributing to lowered carbon emissions. By utilizing existing infrastructure, the project minimizes costs and maximizes efficiency, reflecting a significant move towards sustainable energy practices in Italy.
