ISRO's Radio-Sonde Launch in Samba: Advancing Atmospheric Research
Key Ideas
  • The Centre University of Jammu successfully launched a Radio-Sonde tool in collaboration with ISRO in Samba, Jammu and Kashmir.
  • Hydrogen-filled balloons are used to collect atmospheric data such as pressure, temperature, and wind direction from 12 km above the earth's surface.
  • The initiative, part of the 'Make in India' vision, aims to enhance atmospheric understanding, contribute to meteorological research, and strengthen space science innovation.
  • The project marks a significant achievement in advancing space science research, with the data collected expected to pave the way for future collaborations and research endeavors.
The Centre University of Jammu (CUJ) in collaboration with ISRO successfully launched a Radio-Sonde tool from its ISRO centre in Samba district of Jammu and Kashmir. This launch is part of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the National Remote Sensing Centre (NRSC), ISRO, and CUJ, aimed at enhancing atmospheric data collection and understanding climate change. Using hydrogen-filled balloons, scientists record crucial atmospheric parameters from 12 km above the earth's surface and transmit the data via radio signals for research. CUJ Vice Chancellor Prof Sanjeev Jain highlighted the significance of this achievement, showcasing the commitment to advancing space science research and technology. The Radio-Sonde system, developed indigenously by ISRO under the 'Make in India' vision, strengthens research capabilities and positions the institution at the forefront of atmospheric studies. The launch, conducted in the afternoon, is expected to provide valuable data as it ascends to a maximum height of 40 km. The Satish Dhawan Centre for Space Sciences within the university has played a pivotal role in providing the necessary infrastructure for such projects. The successful Radio-Sonde launch is anticipated to lead to future collaborations and research initiatives in space and atmospheric sciences. The collected data will be analyzed for various research projects, contributing significantly to the broader field of space sciences.
