John Cockerill to Supply 1.3 GW Electrolyzers for Green Ammonia Project in India
Key Ideas
- John Cockerill will provide 1.3 GW of electrolyzers to AM Green for green ammonia production, aiding India's green hydrogen goals.
- AM Green and John Cockerill are collaborating on a 2 GW per year electrolyzer manufacturing plant in Kakinada, Andhra Pradesh.
- The Kakinada facility has been certified by CertifHy for compliance with EU RFNBO requirements, ensuring green ammonia production.
- The National Green Hydrogen Mission in India aims to incentivize electrolyzer manufacturing with a budget of ₹44.4 billion to promote green hydrogen production.
John Cockerill, a Belgium-based company, has secured a deal to supply 1.3 GW of electrolyzers to AM Green for a green ammonia project in India. The electrolyzers will be supplied in two phases of 640 MW each to facilitate the production of green hydrogen and its conversion into green ammonia. Additionally, a joint effort between the two companies will establish a 2 GW per year electrolyzer manufacturing plant in Kakinada, Andhra Pradesh, to support the project. AM Green's Kakinada facility has received certification from CertifHy for meeting EU RFNBO requirements for green ammonia production. The company has also secured offtake agreements for the project to be used in various green hydrogen applications. This initiative aligns with AM Green's goal of reaching 5 million tons per annum of green ammonia capacity by 2030 to aid in achieving net zero targets in India and OECD markets. The output from these facilities is estimated to produce around 1 million tons per annum of green hydrogen, contributing significantly to India's green hydrogen targets and Europe's green hydrogen import objectives. The Ministry of New and Renewable Energy in India has allocated ₹44.4 billion to promote electrolyzer manufacturing under the National Green Hydrogen Mission, which aims to establish a green hydrogen production capacity of 5 million tons per year, with an expected investment of over ₹8 trillion and the creation of 600,000 jobs by 2030. Notable companies like Reliance Electrolyzer Manufacturing, John Cockerill Green Hydrogen Solutions, Jindal India, and Adani New Industries have also been involved in the development of electrolyzer manufacturing capacities in India.
