Key Ideas
  • Larsen & Toubro plans to invest Rs 48,000 crore over 10 years to build six green ammonia production units in Gujarat.
  • Each unit will have a capacity of 300 KTPA and will be developed in six phases at a cost of Rs 8,000 crore per facility.
  • The investment aims to support India's carbon emission reduction goals and promote clean energy through green ammonia production.
  • L&T is collaborating with French company McPhy Energy to manufacture alkaline-based electrolysers for the project.
Larsen & Toubro (L&T), an Indian multinational corporation, has announced a massive investment of up to Rs 48,000 crore over the next decade to construct six green ammonia production facilities in Kandla, Gujarat. Each of these units will have a capacity of 300 kilotonnes per annum and will be developed in six phases, with an estimated cost of Rs 8,000 crore per facility. This significant investment is part of India's efforts to lower carbon emissions and promote clean energy solutions. Green ammonia, a crucial component in industrial decarbonisation, is manufactured using water electrolysis powered by renewable energy sources. L&T is currently in discussions with various global partners for the production and export of this environmentally friendly product. To further bolster their green energy initiatives, the company is in the process of designing an eco-friendly ammonia export hub on 500 acres of land acquired at Kandla Port in the previous year. In addition to this, L&T is working on obtaining approvals for a green power supply to support the ammonia production. To facilitate these activities, the company has established a partnership with McPhy Energy, a French firm specializing in hydrogen production equipment, to produce alkaline-based electrolysers for the project. This strategic collaboration underlines L&T's commitment to sustainable manufacturing practices and contributing to the global shift towards clean energy technologies.
