McDermott to Build Canada's First Green Hydrogen and Ammonia Production Facility in Central Newfoundland
Key Ideas
  • McDermott has been awarded the contract for Canada's first commercial green hydrogen and ammonia production facility in Central Newfoundland.
  • The project includes a 530-turbine wind farm with 3.5 GW capacity, 150 MW solar photovoltaic, 165kta of hydrogen, and 5000 metric tons/day of ammonia.
  • The agreement involves front-end engineering design, EPC execution planning services, and cost estimates for hydrogen and ammonia production, led by McDermott.
  • The project aims to showcase McDermott's industry-leading expertise in energy transition, offering a modular implementation solution for cost savings and quality assurance.
McDermott has secured an Early Contractor Involvement (ECI) agreement from Abraxas Power Corporation for the Exploits Valley Renewable Energy Corporation (EVREC) project in Central Newfoundland, Canada. This project marks a significant milestone as it will establish Canada's first commercial green hydrogen and ammonia production facility. The project's key components include a massive 530-turbine wind farm capable of generating 3.5 GW of electricity, a 150 MW solar photovoltaic system, and the capacity to produce 165kta of hydrogen and 5000 metric tons per day of ammonia. Rob Shaul, McDermott's Senior Vice President of Low Carbon Solutions, expressed confidence in McDermott's ability to deliver on this project, highlighting the company's extensive experience and integrated delivery model. The agreement encompasses various services such as front-end engineering design (FEED), engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) execution planning, as well as an open book EPC cost estimate for the hydrogen and ammonia production sections of the project. The project will be managed primarily from McDermott's Houston office with support from its Gurgaon office in India. This venture aims to leverage McDermott's expertise in the energy transition sector to provide a repeatable modular implementation solution that will drive cost efficiencies, mitigate risks, and ensure quality. Overall, the project signifies a significant step towards sustainable energy production in Canada's Central Newfoundland region.
