Odisha Pioneers Green Hydrogen Mobility with Tripartite Agreement
Key Ideas
  • A tripartite agreement in Odisha aims to launch a green hydrogen mobility project, involving CRUT, NTPC, and GRIDCO.
  • The project's key components include maintenance of hydrogen-powered buses by CRUT, hydrogen production by NTPC, and renewable energy supply by GRIDCO.
  • This initiative aligns with the National Green Hydrogen Mission, focusing on reducing carbon emissions and improving public transport.
  • NTPC will deploy three hydrogen-powered buses, each capable of traveling up to 600 km and accommodating 42 passengers, providing a sustainable alternative to diesel buses.
In a significant move towards sustainable transport, a tripartite agreement has been signed in Odisha to launch a green hydrogen mobility project. The agreement involves Capital Region Urban Transport (CRUT), NTPC, and GRIDCO, outlining their respective roles in the initiative. CRUT will manage the hydrogen-powered buses, NTPC will focus on hydrogen production, and GRIDCO will ensure the supply of renewable energy. The project, set to be implemented over five years, aims to combat climate change and reduce carbon emissions. With the intention of promoting green hydrogen, this initiative will replace diesel buses with environmentally friendly options. NTPC plans to deploy three hydrogen-powered buses, each offering a mileage of 12 km per kilogramme of hydrogen. These buses, designed with 42 seats and a range of 600 km, will provide a sustainable and efficient mode of public transport. Furthermore, NTPC will establish a hydrogen production plant at the CRUT depot in Bhubaneswar, enhancing the state's infrastructure for green energy. The collaboration between the state-owned agencies signifies a positive step towards a cleaner and more sustainable future for transportation in Odisha.
