Odisha Takes Green Leap: Hydrogen-Powered Bus Agreement for Sustainable Mobility
Key Ideas
  • Tripartite agreement signed in Odisha for a green hydrogen mobility project involving CRUT, NTPC, and GRIDCO.
  • NTPC to focus on hydrogen production, GRIDCO on renewable energy supply, and CRUT on maintaining hydrogen-powered buses.
  • Project aims to reduce carbon emissions by replacing diesel buses with green hydrogen buses, enhancing public transport.
  • Three hydrogen-powered buses to be deployed initially with a range of 600 km on 58 kg of hydrogen fuel, promoting sustainable transportation.
In a significant development towards sustainable mobility, Odisha has signed a tripartite agreement for a green hydrogen project involving CRUT, NTPC, and GRIDCO. The project aims at reducing carbon emissions and improving public transport by introducing hydrogen-powered buses. NTPC will focus on hydrogen production, while GRIDCO will ensure renewable energy supply, and CRUT will maintain the buses. These green buses are designed to replace diesel buses, with three buses initially deployed. Each bus can travel up to 600 km on 58 kg of hydrogen fuel, offering a sustainable alternative with 42 passenger seats. NTPC will set up a hydrogen production plant at the CRUT depot in Bhubaneswar, utilizing existing plants to generate hydrogen gas. The project, supported by the National Green Hydrogen Mission, aligns with efforts to transition to greener transportation. The initiative signifies a step towards combating climate change and promoting eco-friendly practices in the region.
