Tata Steel and Welspun Corp have achieved a significant milestone in the transportation of green hydrogen by successfully developing API X65 grade pipes capable of carrying pure gaseous hydrogen under high pressure (100 bar). The testing, conducted at RINA in Italy, confirmed the feasibility of these pipes for hydrogen transport, with Tata Steel becoming the first Indian steel mill to produce hot-rolled steel for this purpose and Welspun Corp being the first Indian pipe mill to manufacture ERW pipes for hydrogen transport. This achievement is a part of their Green Energy Strategic Partnership, which focuses on assessing various pipe types for hydrogen transportation and is in line with the Indian government's green hydrogen policy. The collaboration between Tata Steel and Welspun Corp marks a crucial step towards establishing a more sustainable future through the widespread adoption of green hydrogen. The successful development and testing of these hydrogen-compatible pipes demonstrate the commitment of both companies to contribute to a greener environment and promote the use of green hydrogen in everyday applications. By passing all qualification tests, including those for Longitudinal-seam Submerged Arc Welding (LSAW) pipes, Welspun Corp has further solidified its position in the green hydrogen transportation sector, setting the stage for enhanced infrastructure to support the growing demand for green hydrogen.
