Tata Steel has made history in India by showcasing end-to-end capabilities in developing pipes essential for hydrogen transportation, a critical component of the country's National Hydrogen Mission. The company's achievement involves producing hydrogen-compliant API X65 pipes at its Khopoli plant using steel from its Kalinganagar facility. These pipes are designed to handle 100 percent pure gaseous hydrogen at pressures of up to 100 bar, meeting crucial safety and performance standards. This breakthrough builds on Tata Steel's prior success in creating hot-rolled steel tailored for gaseous hydrogen transportation in 2024, further establishing its prominent role in the energy sector. To ensure the pipes' compliance with international hydrogen transportation standards, hydrogen qualification tests were conducted by RINA-CSM, an accredited agency in Italy specializing in hydrogen-related testing and certification. Tata Steel's innovative approach signifies a significant step towards advancing hydrogen infrastructure and promoting sustainable practices within the steel industry.
