Thermax and Ceres Power Collaborate to Revolutionize Hydrogen Production in India
Key Ideas
  • Thermax partners with Ceres Power to manufacture, sell, and service stack array modules (SAM) based on advanced solid oxide electrolysis cell (SOEC) technology.
  • The collaboration aims to accelerate the deployment of SOEC technology globally, enabling cost-effective green hydrogen production.
  • Thermax will leverage its expertise in heat integration to develop pressurised SAM and SBM, contributing to the efficiency and commercial viability of the electrolysis modules.
  • The partnership is expected to revolutionize hydrogen production by providing highly efficient systems suitable for decarbonizing industries like ammonia, steel, refineries, and chemical production.
Thermax, a prominent company in the energy sector, has announced a strategic collaboration with Ceres Power, a leading developer of clean energy technology, to introduce advanced solid oxide electrolysis (SOEC) technology to India. This partnership includes a global license agreement for Thermax to manufacture, sell, and service stack array modules (SAM) based on Ceres' SOEC technology. Moreover, Thermax will also work on SAM balance of modules (SBM) and multimegawatt SOEC electrolyser modules. The primary goal of this collaboration is to accelerate the adoption of SOEC technology, particularly in India, for efficient green hydrogen production. Leveraging its expertise in heat integration and waste heat recovery, Thermax aims to develop a pressurised SAM and SBM, which are essential components for the multi-MW SOEC electrolyser module. The collaboration is set to bring forth systems that are up to 25% more efficient than existing low-temperature electrolysis technologies, effectively utilizing steam from industrial processes for heat recovery. This innovation is a promising solution for industries struggling with decarbonization, such as ammonia, steel, refineries, and chemical production sectors. Thermax plans to establish a dedicated manufacturing facility for the electrolysers, streamline the supply chain, and localize critical components. This strategic partnership positions Thermax among the leading global providers of large-scale SOEC systems tailored for commercial applications, marking a significant step towards sustainable and innovative hydrogen production.
