  • The establishment of recharging and refuelling points for these vessels is in progress to support the river-based economy and enhance the tourist experience.
India is set to introduce its first hydrogen fuelled catamaran vessel for tourist and passenger services in Varanasi on the Ganga river. The vessel, manufactured at Cochin Shipyard Limited, faced delays in reaching Varanasi due to low water levels. Once handed over to the Uttar Pradesh government, modalities for its operations will be finalized. The catamaran is part of efforts to modernize waterway transportation and boost tourism in the region. With a capacity to board 50-55 persons, it will enhance the experience for tourists visiting Varanasi. The Inland Waterways Authority of India (IWAI) has also introduced Hybrid Electric catamaran vessels for river cruise services in Ayodhya and Kashi. Despite using different fuels, both types of vessels share similar capacities. The IWAI is working on establishing recharging and refuelling points to support these vessels and the river-based economy. This initiative aligns with PM Modi's efforts to develop waterways and enhance facilities for tourists and boatmen, aiming to boost the region's economy.
