AGCO Beauvais Engineering Leads ARHYSTOTE: Pioneering Hydrogen Tanks for Tractors
Key Ideas
  • AGCO's Engineering department is spearheading a French consortium, ARHYSTOTE, to develop advanced hydrogen storage tanks for hydrogen combustion tractors by 2026.
  • The project involves a consortium of French companies investing in high-pressure hydrogen storage technology for agricultural tractors and off-road heavy applications.
  • Funded by the French State, the project aims to create a zero-emissions hydrogen demonstrator tractor based on the Massey Ferguson platform, promoting decarbonization in the agricultural sector.
  • Partners like Cetim, RAIGI, IFTH, CT-IPC, and OliKrom bring expertise in materials, tank design, liners, and innovative technologies to realize the hydrogen storage tanks.
AGCO Beauvais Engineering, a division of AGCO Corporation in France, is leading a new French consortium named ARHYSTOTE to develop cutting-edge hydrogen storage tanks for future hydrogen combustion tractors. The project aims to address the crucial need for on-board storage in off-road machines powered by hydrogen. AGCO, along with partner companies like Cetim, RAIGI, IFTH, CT-IPC, and OliKrom, is focusing on investing in high-pressure hydrogen storage technology to meet duty cycle requirements for agricultural tractors and other heavy off-road applications. The consortium has secured 4.4 million euros in funding from the French State as part of the France 2030 initiative to support the development of innovative hydrogen storage solutions. The project involves eight key steps, including tank design analysis, manufacturing, and initial testing to ensure feasibility and integration into future hydrogen-powered tractors. Frédéric Cavoleau, Vice President of Engineering at AGCO's Beauvais facility, highlights the commitment to sustainability by developing a Massey Ferguson hydrogen demonstrator tractor by 2026. The project aligns with AGCO's goal of reducing environmental footprint and contributing to a sustainable world through hydrogen technology. Partners like Cetim, RAIGI, IFTH, CT-IPC, and OliKrom bring their expertise to the project, focusing on material design, high-pressure composite tanks, hydrogen liners, sensor implementation, and intelligent materials development. The collaboration aims to revolutionize hydrogen storage technology for agricultural machinery, emphasizing eco-friendly and high-performance solutions. Thierry Lhotte, Vice-President & Managing Director of Massey Ferguson Europe & Middle East, emphasizes the importance of hydrogen in the energy transition for heavy-duty off-road vehicles like mid-horsepower tractors. The project underscores AGCO and Massey Ferguson's commitment to offering sustainable products and services to farmers worldwide, paving the way for a greener agricultural sector.
