Dubai's Groundbreaking Green Hydrogen Project Leading the Way in the Middle East
Key Ideas
  • DEWA's Green Hydrogen project in Dubai has produced 90 tonnes of green hydrogen, utilizing solar energy through electrolysis.
  • The initiative has generated over one gigawatt hour of green energy, preventing approximately 450 tonnes of CO2 emissions.
  • Aligned with Dubai's Clean Energy Strategy 2050, the project aims to secure 25% of the low-carbon hydrogen market and achieve net zero carbon emissions by 2050.
  • The project is expected to expand its solar park capacity to over 5,000 MW by 2030, contributing to cost-effective green hydrogen production.
Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA) has recently announced the success of its pioneering Green Hydrogen project, marking a significant milestone in sustainable energy production. This project, the first of its kind in the Middle East and North Africa, has harnessed solar energy to produce 90 tonnes of green hydrogen since its launch. By utilizing electrolysis, renewable energy sources are employed to generate hydrogen, with a current production rate of 20 kilograms per hour and a storage capacity of up to 12 hours. The stored hydrogen is then utilized to produce electricity using a hydrogen gas motor, with a capacity of approximately 300 kilowatts. This groundbreaking initiative has not only produced over one gigawatt hour of green energy but has also successfully offset around 450 tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions. Aligned with the United Arab Emirates' goal to capture 25 percent of the low-carbon hydrogen market, the project is a key component of the Dubai Clean Energy Strategy 2050 and the Dubai Net Zero Carbon Emissions Strategy 2050, which target a complete transition to clean energy sources by 2050. DEWA's Green Hydrogen project serves as a catalyst for future applications of hydrogen in diverse sectors such as transportation and industry. By laying the foundation for hydrogen utilization in air, land, and sea transport, as well as other industrial processes, Dubai is positioning itself as a global leader in renewable energy solutions. The project's solar park, set to reach a production capacity exceeding 5,000 MW by 2030, is poised to revolutionize green hydrogen production by enhancing competitiveness in pricing, further solidifying Dubai's commitment to sustainable energy practices.
