The European Union has awarded South Africa two grants totaling €32m to advance the country's green hydrogen plans. The first grant is designated to support Transnet, a logistics company, with infrastructure costs and developments in railways, ports, and pipelines. The second grant, valued at $27.6m, aims to progress South Africa's green hydrogen value chain, crucial for enabling decarbonisation. These grants will enable South Africa to capitalize on its renewable energy sources like wind and solar for green hydrogen production. European Commissioner for Energy, Kadri Simson, highlighted that the grants are instrumental in helping South Africa achieve its decarbonisation objectives. South Africa's Minister of Energy and Electricity, Kgosientsho Ramokgopa, emphasized the industrial opportunities green hydrogen offers. The EU's commitment extends to supporting green hydrogen investment funds in South Africa and Namibia, further emphasizing international collaboration. Moreover, a consortium led by DNV and Natural Gas secured a UK government grant for a feasibility study to accelerate green hydrogen production and export in South Africa. This influx of funding and partnerships signals a positive outlook for South Africa's green hydrogen industry, positioning it as a key player in renewable energy and decarbonisation efforts.
