Indian Army and IndianOil Collaborate on Hydrogen Fuel Cell Bus Deployment
Key Ideas
- IndianOil supplies a hydrogen-powered fuel cell bus to the Indian Army for heavy-duty mobility in Delhi-NCR.
- Partnership includes assessing fuel cell buses' performance, impact on local fuel and air quality, and operational reliability.
- Indian Army and IndianOil aim to enhance operational capabilities while ensuring environmental sustainability through innovative technology.
IndianOil has provided a hydrogen-powered fuel cell bus to the Indian Army as part of a Memorandum of Understanding to pioneer hydrogen fuel cell technology for heavy-duty mobility. The collaboration involves evaluating the performance of fuel cell electric buses in the Delhi-NCR region, analyzing their impact on local fuel and air quality, and assessing their effectiveness, longevity, and operational reliability for public use. The bus, capable of carrying 37 passengers, has a range of 250-300km on a 30kg tank of hydrogen. General Manoj Pande of the Indian Army expressed commitment to adopting innovative technologies for operational enhancement and environmental sustainability. IndianOil's Chairman, Shrikant Vaidya, highlighted the milestone in achieving a greener and more sustainable future through the partnership. The vehicle handover took place at the National War Memorial, India Gate, New Delhi. Additionally, last year, NTPC initiated hydrogen fuel cell bus and refueling trials in Leh, further pushing for hydrogen technology adoption in India.
