Indian Railways to Launch Hydrogen Train by 2024: A Step Towards Sustainable Transportation
Key Ideas
  • Indian Railways plans to introduce its first hydrogen train by 2024 under the 'Hydrogen for Heritage' initiative.
  • The project aims to build 50 hydrogen trains by 2047, starting with operations on the Sonipat-Jind route in 2027.
  • Medha Servo Drives will design and produce the hydrogen train, in collaboration with Ballard Power Systems for fuel cells and GreenH Electrolysis for infrastructure.
  • The initiative includes constructing a hydrogen production and refueling station in Jind, with an investment of $8.5 million for infrastructure development.
Indian Railways is set to make a significant leap towards sustainable transportation with the planned launch of its first hydrogen train by the end of 2024. Anil Kumar Handelwal of the Railway Board announced that this venture is part of the 'Hydrogen for Heritage' initiative. The project envisions the construction of 50 hydrogen trains by 2047, with the first train scheduled to operate on the Sonipat-Jind route in 2027 and potentially expand to mountainous regions in the north of India. Medha Servo Drives is tasked with the design and production of the hydrogen train, and they have partnered with Ballard Power Systems to supply fuel cells for the project. Additionally, GreenH Electrolysis will develop the infrastructure, including a refueling station in Jind capable of producing 420 kg of hydrogen per day. The station will feature a 3-ton hydrogen storage tank, compressors, and refueling modules for efficient train refueling. The estimated cost for creating one hydrogen train is $10 million, with an additional $8.5 million allocated for infrastructure development. Indian Railways has already dedicated $13 million towards this initiative. This move signifies a milestone in sustainable railway technology for India, emphasizing a shift towards eco-friendly and efficient transportation methods.
