India is set to witness a monumental shift towards green hydrogen, as its annual consumption is predicted to rise from 5-7 million tonnes to 15-20 million tonnes by 2030. A report by SBICAPS highlights the need for investing ₹8-10 trillion in green hydrogen infrastructure, including electrolyser capacity, green molecule production facilities, and renewable energy infrastructure. This surge in demand is primarily fueled by the imperative to decarbonize sectors such as steel and fertilizers, where greenhouse gas emissions are closely tied to material use. Despite the current high costs of green hydrogen production, efforts are underway to make it more competitive by reducing costs to $2 per kg through policy interventions and access to low-cost green finance. India's strategic renewable energy reserves and robust domestic demand position it favorably to lead the global green hydrogen market. The National Green Hydrogen Mission (NGHM) aims to achieve an annual production of 5 million tonnes by 2030, supported by initiatives like the SIGHT program. By addressing investment challenges and providing the necessary incentives, India can accelerate deep decarbonization in challenging sectors while expanding the applications of green hydrogen, solidifying its position as a pioneer in the global clean energy transition.
