Mitsubishi Power to Provide Hydrogen-Ready Gas Turbine for Cogeneration Plant in Saudi Arabia
Key Ideas
  • Mitsubishi Power, part of Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, secures an order to supply a hydrogen-ready gas turbine for a cogeneration plant in Saudi Arabia.
  • The plant, developed by a consortium involving TAQA and JERA Co, aims to produce power and steam for a petrochemical complex in Jubail.
  • The project includes the assembly of the gas turbine in Saudi Arabia and a long-term service agreement for parts, repairs, and services.
  • The petrochemical complex is set to become one of the largest mixed-load steam crackers in the Gulf region, enhancing industrial capabilities.
Mitsubishi Power, a division of Japan's Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, has announced that it will be supplying its M501JAC hydrogen-ready combined-cycle gas turbine to Samsung C&T Corporation Saudi Arabia. The turbine will be used in an industrial steam and electricity cogeneration plant being developed by a consortium of TAQA and JERA Co in Saudi Arabia's Jubail city. This plant is planned to generate 475 megawatts of power along with 452 tonnes per hour of steam for the SATORP Strategic Expansion petrochemical complex. The heavy-duty gas turbine will be assembled in Dammam, Saudi Arabia, at Mitsubishi Power's assembly center, showcasing the local manufacturing aspect of the project. Furthermore, Mitsubishi Power has entered a long-term service agreement with the TAQA and JERA-led consortium to provide ongoing parts, repairs, and services for the turbine. The SATORP petrochemical complex's strategic expansion is significant as it will host one of the largest mixed-load steam crackers in the Gulf region, boosting the industrial capacity in the area. This development not only enhances energy efficiency but also signifies a step towards utilizing hydrogen technology in power generation and industrial processes, aligning with the growing global focus on sustainable energy solutions.
