Key Ideas
  • Saudi Arabia and Germany signed an MoU to export 200,000 tons of green hydrogen annually by 2030, enhancing Saudi's position in green hydrogen production.
  • ACWA Power will lead as developer, investor, and operator while SEFE will co-invest, acting as a major buyer marketing green hydrogen in Europe.
  • The partnership aligns with the Saudi-German Energy Dialogue to boost cooperation in renewable energy and clean hydrogen technologies, strengthening global energy ties.
  • SEFE, a German state-owned energy company, plays a vital role in energy supply security and decarbonisation efforts, covering the entire energy value chain.
Saudi Arabia and Germany have entered into a memorandum of understanding to establish the Saudi-German Green Hydrogen Bridge, a collaborative project between ACWA Power and SEFE. The initiative aims to produce and export 200,000 tons of green hydrogen annually to Europe by 2030. ACWA Power will take the lead in developing, investing, and operating the green hydrogen and ammonia production assets, with SEFE as a co-investor and primary buyer responsible for marketing in Germany and Europe. The signing of the MoU in Riyadh, witnessed by key Energy Ministers from both nations, demonstrates a firm commitment to clean hydrogen efforts, building upon previous agreements from 2021. This partnership not only solidifies Saudi Arabia's role as a leading global green hydrogen producer but also strengthens ties between the two countries in renewable energy and clean technology. SEFE, as a state-owned German energy company, will contribute significantly to ensuring energy supply security and driving decarbonisation initiatives. With its involvement across the entire energy value chain, from origination to trading and storage, SEFE's partnership signifies a key step towards achieving decarbonisation and promoting sustainable energy practices on a global scale.
