ABB and Charbone Hydrogen to Develop Green Hydrogen Facilities in North America
Key Ideas
  • ABB and Charbone Hydrogen plan to build up to 15 green hydrogen facilities in North America in the next five years, starting with a project in Québec, Canada.
  • The first facility in Sorel-Tracy is set to start operations by the end of Q2 2025, producing 400kg of hydrogen initially and serving as a model for future projects.
  • The partnership aims to supply green hydrogen to heavy industries, aligning with Québec's strategy to promote hydrogen and bioenergy use in sectors like transportation, primary metals, and chemicals.
  • Charbone COO mentioned that the collaboration with ABB is a significant step in entering the North American green hydrogen market, indicating a strong commitment to sustainable energy solutions.
ABB and Charbone Hydrogen Corporation have signed a Memorandum of Understanding to establish up to 15 green hydrogen facilities in North America over the next five years, with the first plant to be located in Québec, Canada. The inaugural facility in Sorel-Tracy, expected to be operational by the end of Q2 2025, will produce around 400kg of hydrogen in its initial phase and will act as a prototype for upcoming projects. A second site in the greater Detroit area is also in the plans. ABB will be responsible for standardizing the engineering of the plants and could potentially serve as the primary contractor for automation, electrification, and telecom in the future. The partners intend to supply green hydrogen to heavy industries currently relying on grey hydrogen. The Québec government's support for hydrogen and bioenergy in sectors like transportation, primary metals, and chemicals is expected to bolster this initiative. Charbone's Chief Operating Officer, Daniel Charette, highlighted the importance of the partnership with ABB as a significant step towards capturing a share of the North American green hydrogen market, demonstrating a strong commitment to sustainable energy solutions.
