BMW's Hydrogen Transition in Regensburg: Driving Sustainability Through Innovation
Key Ideas
  • BMW is transitioning its in-plant logistics at Regensburg to hydrogen fuel cell technology for tugger trains and forklift trucks under the iFactory initiative, aiming to support carbon-neutral goals.
  • The transition to hydrogen drives will replace electric battery systems, offering faster refueling, saving space, and optimizing logistics processes at the assembly plant.
  • The company is installing a 2km-long pipeline network with six filling stations at the plant by early 2026 to supply logistics vehicles with hydrogen, reducing carbon dioxide and nitrogen oxide emissions.
BMW is making significant strides in sustainability at its Regensburg assembly plant in Germany through the adoption of hydrogen fuel cell technology for in-plant logistics. Under the iFactory initiative, the company plans to transition its tugger trains and forklift trucks to hydrogen power by 2026. This move is part of BMW's commitment to reducing reliance on electric battery systems and achieving carbon-neutral operations. The transition to hydrogen drives will bring about operational efficiencies, faster refueling, and space savings compared to battery-powered systems. The project manager, Katharina Radtke, highlighted the advantages of hydrogen, including fast refueling akin to conventional fuels and minimal space requirements for filling stations. To support this transition, BMW is setting up a pipeline network with filling stations at the plant to supply hydrogen to logistics vehicles. This infrastructure will enable an annual hydrogen consumption of around 150 tonnes once fully implemented. Additionally, BMW has a history of sustainable transportation practices, using hydrogen fuel cell trucks in Leipzig and liquefied natural gas (LNG) trucks in Regensburg to reduce carbon dioxide and nitrogen oxide emissions. By 2050, BMW aims to make all cargo transport for its operations carbon neutral. The company's initiatives showcase a positive sentiment towards hydrogen technology, emphasizing innovation and environmental responsibility in its operations.
