CWP Global and Corner Brook Port Corporation Partner to Develop Green Hydrogen Hub in Canada
Key Ideas
  • CWP Global and CBPC have signed an MOU to develop a green hydrogen hub in Corner Brook, Canada, harnessing 5GW of wind energy to produce green hydrogen and green iron.
  • The project will include a hot briquetted iron plant and is expected to bring significant economic benefits and new jobs to the province.
  • The companies will conduct a feasibility study, environmental assessment, and seek project registrations, with a focus on alignment with regional development goals and stakeholder consultation.
  • The initiative aims to align with environmental stewardship and economic prosperity, with plans to supply locally produced HBI to steelmakers in Canada and beyond using the province's wind energy potential.
CWP Global and the Corner Brook Port Corporation have joined forces to explore the establishment of a green hydrogen hub in Canada. Known as Project Gwinya, this initiative will leverage up to 5GW of wind energy to produce green hydrogen and green iron at the Port of Corner Brook in Newfoundland and Labrador. A key component of the hub will be a hot briquetted iron (HBI) plant, with expectations to generate long-term benefits for the province through increased economic activity and job opportunities. While a final investment decision and timeline have not been disclosed, the partners are focusing on key tasks such as submitting a project registration, initiating the environmental assessment process, and conducting a feasibility study to evaluate various aspects of the hub including infrastructure, logistics, and economic impacts. Stakeholder engagement is paramount, with commitments to consult with local communities, First Nations, and other relevant parties to ensure alignment with regional development objectives. Steve Delaney of CWP Global emphasized the broader benefits of the project beyond energy transition. Similarly, Jackie Chow, CEO of CBPC, highlighted the importance of environmental stewardship and economic prosperity in the collaboration with CWP Global. This partnership follows CWP Global's agreement with SNIM to export green iron from their AMAN project in Mauritania to the European steel industry by 2030.
