Empire Diversified Energy, Inc. and Heartland Water Technology have joined forces to work on the development of a cutting-edge facility in the Appalachian region aimed at converting food waste into renewable hydrogen. The project is part of the Appalachian Regional Clean Hydrogen Hub (ARCH2) program and involves utilizing innovative technology to process biogas generated from food waste treatment into clean hydrogen and sustainable carbon black. Heartland Water Technology will be applying its proprietary HelioStorm™ ultra-high temperature ionic gasifier technology to carry out methane pyrolysis of the biogas, resulting in the production of clean hydrogen and valuable carbon black. The project also focuses on generating ultra-pure synthesis gas from residual solid material, contributing to clean energy production and reducing reliance on the grid and fossil fuels. The partnership between Empire and Heartland is seen as a significant advancement in waste-to-energy initiatives for sustainable hydrogen production in the region. The collaboration aims to leverage decentralized hydrogen infrastructure and technology to bring about substantial environmental and economic advantages while working towards achieving sustainability goals. The project, initiated in June 2024, emphasizes the importance of converting waste into renewable hydrogen to support the circular economy and decarbonization efforts in the Appalachian region.
