TotalEnergies and Air Liquide Collaborate on Green Hydrogen Production Projects in Europe
Key Ideas
  • TotalEnergies and Air Liquide are partnering to produce 45,000 tons/year of green hydrogen in the Netherlands, significantly reducing CO2 emissions.
  • An electrolyzer near the Zeeland refinery will produce 30,000 tons/year of green hydrogen, cutting CO2 emissions by 300,000 tons/year.
  • A tolling agreement will supply Antwerp with 15,000 tons/year of green hydrogen, reducing CO2 emissions by 150,000 tons/year.
  • TotalEnergies aims to decarbonize its European refineries using low-carbon hydrogen, targeting a reduction of around three million tons of CO2 by 2030.
TotalEnergies, in alignment with its 2030 goal to decarbonize hydrogen in European refineries, has partnered with Air Liquide on green hydrogen production projects in the Netherlands and Belgium. The projects involve the development of electrolyzers powered by renewable energy sources, primarily the OranjeWind offshore wind farm. In the Netherlands, a joint venture will operate a 250 MW electrolyzer near the Zeeland refinery, producing 30,000 tons/year of green hydrogen and reducing CO2 emissions by up to 300,000 tons annually. Additionally, TotalEnergies has signed a tolling agreement with Air Liquide for 15,000 tons/year of green hydrogen to be supplied to Antwerp from an electrolyzer in Maasvlakte. These initiatives aim to cut CO2 emissions by 450,000 tons/year from TotalEnergies' refineries in Belgium and the Netherlands. The companies highlight the importance of such projects in reducing emissions in challenging sectors like industry and heavy mobility. TotalEnergies is committed to leveraging low-carbon hydrogen to decrease its European refineries' carbon footprint, with a targeted annual CO2 reduction of three million tons by 2030. This collaboration signifies a step towards sustainable energy solutions and supports Europe's decarbonization goals.
