Yanmar Power Technology Co., Ltd., a subsidiary of Yanmar Holdings, has been granted Approval in Principle (AiP) by the classification society DNV for its GH320FC maritime hydrogen fuel cell system. This system is designed as an advanced power source for marine applications, offering easy installation on various vessel types and the flexibility to connect multiple units in parallel. With the ability to adjust the number of hydrogen fuel cell modules, it can cater to different power requirements across various ship types and operations. Eric Tigelaar, from Yanmar Europe, expressed excitement about meeting customer demands for sustainable energy solutions in the maritime sector. The hydrogen fuel cell system is particularly suitable for applications like coastal passenger ferries, inland waterway cargo vessels, and operations in low or zero emission zones in Europe. Masaru Hirose, General Manager at Yanmar PT, highlighted the importance of this milestone in providing hydrogen fuel cell solutions to European clients. By leveraging their experience from previous installations, such as a hydrogen fuel cell system in use on a coastal passenger ferry in Japan, Yanmar aims to assist customers in achieving decarbonization objectives. Olaf Drews, of DNV Maritime, emphasized the necessity for zero-emission operations in the maritime industry. He noted that fuel cells, combined with renewable fuels, present an efficient and scalable solution for meeting this challenge. DNV is pleased to award the AiP to Yanmar, acknowledging the company's forward-looking approach towards setting the stage for the next generation of environmentally friendly vessels. The partnership between DNV and Yanmar aims to leverage innovative technologies for the benefit of the maritime industry, promoting safe and sustainable practices.
