Austal, a shipbuilding company, has been awarded a lucrative contract by Gotlandsbolaget, a ferry operator in Sweden, to design and construct a state-of-the-art hydrogen-ready ferry worth $270 million. This revolutionary 130-metre high-speed ro-pax ferry, a part of Gotlandsbolaget's Horizon X program, will redefine commercial ferry capabilities. With the capacity to carry up to 1500 passengers, cargo, and 400 vehicles, it represents the largest vessel ever built by Austal. The project, announced in April 2023, received approval from classification society DNV in October 2024. The ferry will feature a groundbreaking combined cycle propulsion system with gas and steam turbines, a first for high-speed craft, and a multi-fuel and hydrogen-capable powerplant, showcasing a commitment to decarbonisation. Collaboration between Austal and Gotlandsbolaget aims to introduce cutting-edge technology, including 'green aluminium' construction and advanced hull design, to minimize fuel consumption and emissions.
