Fiji Gas, in collaboration with Obayashi Corporation from Japan and Halcyon Power of New Zealand, hosted a pioneering demonstration of a hydrogen dual-fuel generator at their Lautoka depot. This milestone achievement involved the generator supplying power to Fiji Gas' Lautoka terminal site, contributing to savings on their electricity bill during operation. Abdul Ali, Fiji Gas Operations Manager, emphasized the project's significance in aligning with Fiji's clean energy goals, emphasizing the need to explore innovative solutions for decarbonizing energy and reducing reliance on fossil fuels. The Ministry of Trade and Co-operatives also commended the project, noting the adaptability and infrastructure benefits of the hydrogen generator in reducing carbon emissions as part of the National Development Plan. This demonstration project not only showcases Fiji's commitment to sustainable energy practices but also positions the country as a leader in clean energy initiatives within small island developing states. With a total project cost of around $US2m, the successful launch of this hydrogen dual-fuel generator represents a vital step towards a more sustainable and greener future in the Pacific Islands.
