Indian Railways is set to launch India's first hydrogen-powered train by March 31, heralding a monumental leap towards sustainable transportation. This groundbreaking initiative will position India among global leaders in green mobility, aligning with countries like Germany, France, China, and the UK. Hydrogen-powered trains signify the future of eco-friendly transport, offering a sustainable alternative to diesel engines. The upcoming hydrogen train, currently under construction at the Integral Coach Factory in Chennai, will run on the Jind-Sonipat route, covering approximately 89 km in Northern Railway's Delhi Division. Engineered by the Research Design and Standards Organisation (RDSO), the train is a testament to India's prowess in indigenous design and manufacturing. With a robust 1,200 HP engine, the hydrogen train exceeds the power capacity of similar models globally, positioning it as one of the most powerful hydrogen trains. Operating on hydrogen fuel cells, the train emits only water vapor, making it an environmentally friendly substitute for traditional diesel trains. The project also includes the development of a dedicated hydrogen infrastructure, supported by safety approvals from the Petroleum and Explosives Safety Organisation (PESO). With a significant investment of INR 2,800 crore for 35 hydrogen trains, Indian Railways is set to revolutionize clean energy transportation in the country. Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw highlighted the project's significance in reducing carbon emissions and fostering a greener future for India's rail network.
