Mars Petcare Wodonga Facility Leading the Way in Renewable Energy Innovation
Key Ideas
  • Mars Petcare's Wodonga facility in Victoria will be the first large-scale steam-based manufacturing site in Australia to transition to 100% renewable energy by 2026.
  • The project involves a mix of solar and thermal energy technologies, including an 18-megawatt Parabolic Trough Concentrated Solar Thermal (CST) plant providing hours of thermal energy storage.
  • The initiative is a result of a successful collaboration between Mars and research partners, showcasing leadership in industrial decarbonization and energy innovation.
  • Additional efforts such as the implementation of Electrical Thermal Energy Storage (eTES) systems and the purchase of Renewable Gas Guarantee of Origin certificates at Hydrogen Park Murray Valley further contribute to the facility's renewable energy goals.
Mars Petcare's Wodonga facility in Victoria is set to achieve a significant renewable energy milestone by becoming Australia's first large-scale steam-based manufacturing site to operate entirely on renewable energy by 2026. The project, in collaboration with research partners, focuses on a mix of solar and thermal energy technologies. Dominic Zaal, the Team Leader for the project, highlighted the importance of this initiative in supporting Australia's net-zero emission targets. The project includes the installation of an 18-megawatt Parabolic Trough Concentrated Solar Thermal (CST) plant that offers several hours of thermal energy storage, aiding in overnight steam production and electricity generation. The initiative also features Electrical Thermal Energy Storage (eTES) systems that allow for efficient heat generation using renewable electricity, displacing the need for gas. Mars' partnership with the Australian Gas Infrastructure Group (AGIG) to purchase Renewable Gas Guarantee of Origin certificates at Hydrogen Park Murray Valley further strengthens their commitment to renewable energy. Craig Sargeant, General Manager of Mars Petcare Australia and New Zealand, highlights the complementarity of CST, eTES systems, and hydrogen purchase in achieving a 100% renewable energy solution for the Wodonga facility. This groundbreaking project not only sets an example for the manufacturing industry but also paves the way for other Mars sites to follow suit. Through innovative solutions and collaborative efforts, Mars is demonstrating leadership in industrial decarbonization and renewable energy transition.
