CryoVac, a Norwegian firm based in Vikersund, has achieved a major milestone with its liquid hydrogen storage system, receiving Approval in Principle (AiP) from DNV, a renowned classification society. The innovative system includes cooling hydrogen to an ultra-low temperature of -253°C and utilizes prismatic tanks along with hexagonal vacuum insulation panels to achieve a very low boil-off rate while ensuring steel integrity. CEO Aage Bjørn Andersen stated that this breakthrough technology opens the door to simplifying prismatic tanks for liquid hydrogen transport. The AiP confirmation signifies the system's feasibility and paves the way for further development. CryoVac now aims to construct a 45,000m3 liquid hydrogen carrier with three cargo holds, each housing a 15,000m3 tank, in collaboration with DNV to secure General Approval for Ship Application (GASA). The vessel is designed not only for transporting liquid hydrogen but also for hydrogen propulsion. Andersen emphasized the global interest in a safe and cost-effective liquid hydrogen shipping solution, underscoring the company's mission to establish a comprehensive supply chain for this clean energy source. CryoVac's ambitious plans and technological advancements signal a significant step forward in promoting hydrogen as a viable and sustainable alternative in the transportation sector.
