The Union Government in India has approved three pilot projects under the National Green Hydrogen Mission focused on integrating hydrogen into steel production. This initiative follows guidelines issued by the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy to carry out pilot projects in the steel sector. The aim is to identify and advance technologies that can incorporate green hydrogen into steelmaking through pilot initiatives. The projects will demonstrate the safe and efficient use of hydrogen-based processes for steel production, validate their technical feasibility, assess performance, and evaluate economic viability, all with the goal of achieving low-carbon steel production. The projects include producing Direct Reduced Iron using 100% hydrogen, reducing coal and coke usage in blast furnaces through hydrogen integration, and injecting hydrogen into DRI production units. The projects, led by various organizations, will receive financial support of Rs. 347 crore and are expected to be commissioned within the next three years. The National Green Hydrogen Mission, launched with a significant budget allocated through FY 2029-30, aims to drive India's clean energy transformation. The mission seeks to make India self-reliant in energy, reduce carbon emissions, decrease dependence on fossil fuel imports, and establish the country as a leader in green hydrogen technology and market development.
