Power Connection Project Between Dominican Republic and Puerto Rico to Include Green Hydrogen Integration
Key Ideas
  • Equipment procurement for the power connection project between the Dominican Republic and Puerto Rico is set to begin next year.
  • The 145km, 700MW HVDC Hostos project includes a 200MW solar plant and a combined cycle plant, with plans to incorporate green hydrogen for the thermoelectric plant.
  • The project aims to enhance grid resiliency and reliability for both islands and enable resource sharing of existing infrastructure such as ports, gas pipelines, and renewable energy sources.
  • Construction is scheduled to commence in 2027 with operations expected to start in 2031 after obtaining necessary permits and approvals.
The Caribbean Transmission Development Company (CTDC) is moving forward with plans for a power connection project between the Dominican Republic and Puerto Rico. The project, named the HVDC Hostos project, involves the installation of a 145km power connection with a capacity of 700MW. Additionally, the project includes the construction of a 200MW solar plant and a combined cycle plant in the Dominican Republic. One of the key highlights of the project is the integration of green hydrogen usage in the thermoelectric plant, which initially will rely on natural gas before transitioning to green hydrogen. Tirso Selman, the project director at CTDC, mentioned that the project's main objective is to boost the grid's resilience and reliability for both islands while fostering the sharing of resources such as ports, gas pipelines, and renewable energy facilities. The project has initiated the application process for a presidential permit, and upon approval, the company will proceed with engineering design and securing necessary construction permits. The grid deployment office under the US Department of Energy is evaluating the environmental impact of the project. Construction is anticipated to start in 2027, with operations planned to commence in 2031. The project is poised to contribute to the advancement of infrastructure and renewable energy development in the region.
