Sydney-based company Rux Energy has received $3 million in federal grants to conduct pilot trials for their innovative hydrogen storage technology. The company's breakthrough involves using nanoporous materials to store hydrogen at near-liquid densities in moderate temperatures at lower pressures with no boil-off. This technology, claimed to be 10 times more energy efficient and cost-effective, allows for large volumes of hydrogen to be stored and transported in moveable packages. Rux Energy's method involves filling storage tanks with nanomaterial to expand the tank's surface area, making it possible to store hydrogen in legacy containers and systems. The company's founder, Dr. Jehan Kanga, highlights the flexibility of the technology, emphasizing its application in port operations and shipping to decarbonize tug boats and potentially other vessels like trains and planes. Rux Energy is also collaborating with tank manufacturers to develop optimized carbon composite tanks. Notably, the company has expanded its presence to the UK, opening an office in Harwich, Essex, and partnering with Freeport East to demonstrate moveable green hydrogen-powered generators for ships at port. This initiative, known as the SPOHL project, aims to significantly reduce marine diesel usage by around one-third and port carbon emissions by about 90%. Rux Energy's efforts have garnered international attention, with industry trials ongoing in the UK and Australia, and plans in progress for Singapore. The company's commitment to innovation and sustainability has also earned them a nomination in the InnovationAus 2024 Awards for Excellence.
