HD Korea Shipbuilding & Offshore Engineering (HD KSOE) has been granted approval in principle (AIP) by the American Bureau of Shipping (ABS) for a new tank design that focuses on facilitating large-scale hydrogen transport and storage. This innovative tank incorporates a vacuum insulation system that aims to reduce the time needed to establish a vacuum in large tanks, which is crucial for hydrogen transportation. By maintaining a vacuum state at -253℃, the tank enables safer and loss-free transport of significant volumes of liquid hydrogen. ABS conducted thorough design reviews to ensure compliance with class and statutory requirements. Notably, the validation process engaged global energy and shipping giants such as Woodside Energy, Mitsui O.S.K. Lines (MOL), and Hyundai Glovis. These companies collaborated with HD KSOE in jointly developing an 80,000-cubic-meter liquid hydrogen carrier. Dr. Byeongyong Yoo, the vice president of HD KSOE, highlighted the company's dedication to driving technological advancements in large-scale energy shipping. Apart from hydrogen, the company's focus extends to LNG, LPG, ammonia, and CO2. The hydrogen vacuum system, along with its successful large-scale validation test, demonstrates HD KSOE's commitment to leading the way in innovative energy shipping solutions.
