Viking and Fincantieri have unveiled groundbreaking details about the Viking Libra, poised to become the world's first hydrogen-powered cruise ship. Currently being constructed at Fincantieri's shipyard in Ancona, the Viking Libra is set for delivery in late 2026. Alongside it, the Viking Astrea, another hydrogen-powered vessel, is scheduled for delivery in 2027. These ships, part of Viking's eco-conscious fleet, will utilize a hybrid propulsion system that incorporates liquefied hydrogen and fuel cells, ensuring zero-emission operations. Viking's chairman, Torstein Hagen, expressed pride in the decision to invest in hydrogen technology, emphasizing its true zero-emission capabilities. Furthermore, contracts have been signed for additional hydrogen-powered ocean ships set for delivery in 2031, solidifying Viking's commitment to sustainable practices. The cruise line also plans to add numerous river and ocean ships by 2028 and 2031, respectively, expanding its eco-friendly fleet to include 110 river ships and 23 ocean and expedition ships by 2031.
