EET and SSE Collaborate on 40 MW Green Hydrogen Project in Northwest England
Key Ideas
  • EET and SSE are partnering to build a 40 MW green hydrogen project at the Stanlow Manufacturing Complex in Ellesmere Port, Cheshire.
  • The Gowy Green Hydrogen project aims to deliver hydrogen to industrial offtakers to support decarbonization efforts and job growth in the region.
  • The project is expected to be operational by 2028, with feasibility studies ongoing and a planning application anticipated in 2025.
  • Both companies emphasize the importance of green hydrogen in achieving a clean power system and enabling hard-to-abate industries to decarbonize.
Essar Energy Transition (EET) has joined forces with UK-based gas-fired power generator SSE to establish a 40 MW green hydrogen project in northwest England. The collaboration, known as Gowy Green Hydrogen, is set to be located at the Stanlow Manufacturing Complex in Ellesmere Port, Cheshire. This project, named after the River Gowy and nearby Gowy Meadows Nature Reserve, is envisioned to provide hydrogen to industrial consumers in the region to aid in their decarbonization strategies, thereby fostering job creation. The timeline for Gowy Green Hydrogen indicates potential operation by 2028, with current efforts focusing on conducting feasibility studies and site investigations, while a planning application is slated for 2025. The UK's commitment to achieving low-carbon hydrogen targets, aiming for 10 GW by 2030, underscores the significance of initiatives like Gowy Green Hydrogen in advancing clean energy solutions. EET's CEO, Joe Seifert, expressed enthusiasm about this project contributing to their mission of becoming a prominent low-carbon hydrogen entity. SSE's Director of Business Development, Hannah Bronwin, highlighted the necessity of scaling up green hydrogen production to address industry decarbonization challenges. SSE's holistic approach includes various hydrogen projects throughout the value chain, recognizing hydrogen's pivotal role in the transition to a net-zero economy.
