Innovative Green Hydrogen Project to Boost Decarbonisation Efforts in the North West
Key Ideas
  • SSE and EET Hydrogen are collaborating on the Gowy Green Hydrogen project in Ellesmere Port, aiming to deliver green hydrogen to industrial offtakers in the North West region.
  • The project aligns with the UK's goal of achieving 10GW of low-carbon hydrogen production by 2030 to support the transition to a clean power system and assist hard-to-abate industries in decarbonising.
  • Gowy Green Hydrogen, once operational by 2028, will contribute to job creation, environmental sustainability, and the region's role in driving the energy transition towards net zero.
  • Both companies view this project as crucial in their efforts to become leaders in low-carbon hydrogen production and advance solutions for industry decarbonisation and clean energy generation.
SSE and EET Hydrogen have joined forces to establish a new green hydrogen production facility, Gowy Green Hydrogen, at the Stanlow Manufacturing Complex in Ellesmere Port, Cheshire. The project, named after the Gowy River and the adjacent Gowy Meadows Nature Reserve, aims to provide hydrogen to industrial users in the North West to facilitate their decarbonisation efforts and contribute to job creation in the area. The initiative is in line with the UK's target of achieving 10GW of low-carbon hydrogen production by 2030. Gowy Green Hydrogen is anticipated to be operational by 2028, with feasibility studies already completed and further development ongoing. SSE, known as the UK's clean energy advocate, is actively involved in various hydrogen projects spanning production, storage, and power generation. The collaboration with EET Hydrogen signifies their commitment to driving the transition towards net zero by offering green hydrogen solutions to industries. Both companies expressed enthusiasm for the project, emphasizing its importance in the context of industry decarbonisation, job creation, and supporting the regional energy transformation. The joint effort reflects a positive outlook on green hydrogen as a key element in the shift towards cleaner energy systems and the decarbonisation of challenging industrial sectors.
