The Dutch chemical industry, a significant contributor to global CO2 emissions due to its reliance on fossil fuels like oil and natural gas, is seeking to enhance sustainability and competitiveness for the future. To achieve this, the industry is turning towards more sustainable forms of energy, particularly green hydrogen and electrons. A call has been made to bring together scientists and companies in the chemical sector for collaborative research aimed at replacing fossil fuels with green hydrogen and/or electrons.
The research focus includes developing better catalysts for the production of fuels and chemicals from CO2 and hydrogen, exploring electrochemical and plasma chemical conversion processes, and utilizing direct process heating with electrons through methods like infrared or microwave radiation. The combined application of these techniques is expected to enhance efficiency, energy efficiency, and flexibility within the industry.
With a budget exceeding €35.3 million, interested parties are invited to participate in workshops to form consortia and prepare proposals for sustainable energy projects. The workshops, scheduled for December 2024 and January 2025, will lead to the submission deadline in March 2025. The call is part of the National Growth Fund Programme GroenvermogenNL, which aims to leverage green hydrogen as a catalyst for transitioning towards sustainable energy supplies and fostering a new industry and business environment in the Netherlands by 2028.
The National Growth Fund, managed by NWO, supports thematic programmes that drive research, knowledge development, and innovation to enhance the long-term prosperity and welfare of the country. By uniting stakeholders across the knowledge chain, these programmes seek to facilitate sustainable growth and innovation in various sectors of the Dutch economy.
