The Chief Secretary (Energy) of Andhra Pradesh, K Vijayanand, recently chaired a virtual review meeting to discuss the state's energy landscape. With the impending rise in electricity demand before summer, Vijayanand urged collective efforts to provide free power for agriculture for nine hours and ensure uninterrupted 24x7 power supply for all consumers. The government has already sanctioned 40,000 new agricultural connections, with over 12,000 released and efforts underway to expedite the remaining connections. Vijayanand highlighted the necessity for APGENCO to generate a significant portion of the expected peak power demand in summer, reaching around 13,700 megawatts. Emphasis was also placed on renewable energy, with the state committing to add 72.6 GW of renewable capacity over the next six years, including substantial contributions from solar, wind, pumped storage, and bio-energy. Clean energy projects worth Rs 85,727 crore have been approved, with investments in solar, wind, green hydrogen, and biogas production. The state is also focusing on infrastructure development, with the commissioning of new substations and transmission lines to enhance power reliability. Smart meter installations are progressing well, with over 2,34,019 units installed under APEPDCL and 51,107 under APCPDCL's RDSS scheme. Additionally, progress under initiatives like the PM-Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana has been praised, with thousands of rooftop solar installations completed. Overall, Andhra Pradesh's push for renewable energy expansion, power infrastructure development, and efficient energy management signals a positive outlook towards meeting the state's electricity demand while promoting clean and sustainable energy sources.
