Atlas Agro Partners with Casa dos Ventos for Green Hydrogen Production in Brazil
Key Ideas
- Atlas Agro and Casa dos Ventos signed an MOU to utilize renewable energy from wind and solar projects to produce green hydrogen for green fertilizer in Uberaba, Brazil.
- The project aims to start operations in 2028 with the capacity to produce 530,000 short tons/year of green ammonium nitrate, essential for reducing carbon emissions in agriculture.
- Casa dos Ventos will supply 300 megawatts of renewable energy to the plant, contributing to Brazil's renewable energy matrix and reducing import dependence for nitrogen fertilizer.
- The partnership between the two companies aims to decarbonize global nitrogen production, ensuring cost-competitive and reliable energy for sustainable fertilizer production in Brazil.
Atlas Agro, a fertilizer producer in Brazil, has entered into a memorandum of understanding with renewable energy company Casa dos Ventos to collaborate on utilizing renewable energy sources to produce green hydrogen for green fertilizer. The partnership, based in Uberaba, Brazil, aims to leverage Casa dos Ventos' renewable portfolio to enable Atlas Agro to produce green hydrogen at its fertilizer plant. The project, expected to commence operations in 2028, plans to generate 530,000 short tons/year of green ammonium nitrate, a crucial component in reducing carbon emissions in agricultural production.
To power the plant sustainably, Casa dos Ventos will supply 300 megawatts of renewable energy, emphasizing the commitment to expanding Brazil's renewable energy matrix. Additionally, the project intends to decrease Brazil's reliance on nitrogen fertilizer imports, as the country is currently the largest global importer, receiving an estimated 41 million short tons in 2023.
Knut Karlsen, the President of Atlas Agro Brazil, expressed the company's focus on decarbonizing global nitrogen production by ensuring affordable and sustainable nitrogen fertilizers for local farmers. The collaboration with Casa dos Ventos is seen as a step towards providing green, locally produced nitrogen fertilizers to enhance sustainability in Brazilian agriculture.
