Australia's Renewable Hydrogen Advancement in New South Wales
Key Ideas
  • Solarig and Jemena have joined forces to inject up to 35TJ of renewable hydrogen per year into the gas distribution network of New South Wales, fostering the growth of Australia's renewable hydrogen market.
  • The collaboration aims to develop hydrogen production and blending facilities to support industries like transport, agriculture, and mining in their decarbonization efforts in regional Australia.
  • Jemena is also pursuing biomethane projects with Optimal Energy, potentially producing up to 1.5PJ of biomethane annually, further contributing to the renewable gas industry growth in the region.
  • The initiatives by Solarig and Jemena, along with the biomethane projects, showcase the potential for a renewable gas industry to flourish, bringing circular economy benefits and job opportunities to regional areas.
In a significant development for Australia's renewable energy sector, Solarig and Jemena have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to collaborate on the feasibility and supply of zero-carbon renewable hydrogen in New South Wales. The partnership aims to initially inject up to 35TJ of renewable hydrogen per year into Jemena's gas distribution network, with a focus on building hydrogen production and blending facilities in regional New South Wales. Andrew Want, Solarig's Australian Country Manager, highlighted the urgency of decarbonizing gas and liquid fuels, emphasizing the role of green hydrogen infrastructure in supporting various industries' decarbonization efforts. Jemena's Managing Director, David Gillespie, expressed the company's commitment to supporting a renewable gas market for long-term decarbonization, recognizing the need for diverse renewable energy sources to achieve emission reduction targets. The renewable hydrogen produced will be powered by 100% renewable electricity from Solarig's projects or through renewable energy purchases. With a strong presence in multiple countries, Solarig is leading the transition to sustainable energy infrastructure. Additionally, Jemena's collaboration with Optimal Energy on biomethane projects further enhances the renewable gas industry in New South Wales. Biomethane, created from processing biogas, offers circular economy benefits and aligns with existing gas infrastructure. The combined efforts in renewable hydrogen and biomethane projects signify a positive step towards sustainable energy in Australia. The potential for a flourishing renewable gas industry not only contributes to decarbonization but also offers economic development and job opportunities in regional areas.
